However, the rainy season can also increase the risk of certain waterborne, mosquito-borne and seasonal infections. Here are some simple precautions to help you and your family stay healthy this monsoon.

Prevent illnesses at the source

Illnesses such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya, typhoid and cholera can become more common during the rainy season. Taking a few preventive measures can help reduce the risk.

Drink water from a safe and reliable source. Store drinking water in clean, covered containers and clean them regularly. If the local authorities advise that the water supply may be unsafe, boil or treat the water as directed. Carry your own water bottle when stepping out and, when necessary, choose properly sealed packaged water from a trusted source.

Stagnant water can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Keep water storage containers and tanks covered, and empty, scrub and dry them at least once a week. Do not allow water to collect in buckets, flowerpots, trays, coolers, discarded tyres or other items lying outdoors. Mosquito repellents, nets and window screens can provide additional protection.

Keep your home clean and well ventilated. Address leaks and dampness promptly, dispose of household waste regularly, and keep bathrooms and kitchen sinks clean.

Make safe food and hygiene choices

Choose freshly prepared food from hygienic sources and avoid stale, uncovered or improperly stored food. Cut fruits and other food items left exposed in the open should also be avoided. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with safe water before consumption.

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, particularly before preparing or eating food and after using the washroom. Avoid walking through floodwater, as it may be contaminated. If exposure is unavoidable, wash the exposed areas thoroughly, change out of wet clothes and dry your feet and footwear.

Carry an umbrella or raincoat and wear weather-appropriate clothing and waterproof footwear. Change out of damp clothing promptly to avoid discomfort and skin irritation.

Support your overall health

A balanced diet containing fruits, vegetables, protein-rich foods and adequate fluids can support overall health. Traditional ingredients such as amla, tulsi, garlic and turmeric may be included as part of a balanced diet if they suit your health needs. Consult a qualified dietitian or healthcare professional for personalised dietary advice.

Monsoon-related travel disruptions can affect sleep and daily routines. Make time for adequate rest, manage stress and remain physically active. Indoor exercise or yoga can be helpful when outdoor conditions are unsuitable.

Take extra care of vulnerable family members

Older adults, pregnant women, young children and people with chronic medical conditions or weakened immunity may need additional care. Ensure that their prescribed medicines, vaccinations and routine medical consultations remain on schedule.

Know when to seek medical advice

Do not ignore symptoms such as persistent or high fever, severe headache, body aches, rash, worsening cough, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration.

Seek immediate medical attention for severe abdominal pain, bleeding, extreme drowsiness or confusion, difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting or an inability to drink fluids. Avoid self-medication and consult a qualified healthcare professional if symptoms persist or worsen.

This monsoon, simple precautions and healthy choices can help you and your family stay safe, healthy and worry-free.
