This includes permission for gyms and fitness studios to re-open and operate under guidelines defined by the government. Under these guidelines, the gyms and fitness studios can only operate with 50% occupancy at any point of time. Other precautionary measures include:

- regular sanitization of the complete space and workout equipment;

- ensuring adequate distance between members;

- making prior appointments mandatory for members to avoid crowding;

- temperature check of staff and members before admission;

- provision of hand sanitizers at multiple points; etc.

The Government can define and enforce guidelines, and the gym/fitness studio owners can diligently follow them to ensure a safe environment for the members. However, the ultimate onus of practicing safety norms and taking necessary precautions to stay safe from the dreaded virus is on the individual. And if you are planning to head to the public gym or fitness studio, you are taking a big risk. This is because, however passionate a fitness enthusiast you are, there are several safer ways to maintain your fitness regime. Hire a personal trainer and work out at home. If possible buy simple workout equipment that is inexpensive and does not take up too much space either. Use the outdoors to team up with friends for a workout session. Take up online fitness challenges that have become rather popular nowadays.

The reason we are trying to divert you from hitting your work-out establishment is for the simple fact that it is a public place. If possible, it is best avoided. The second reason that adds to the first, is that workout studios or gyms are usually closed spaces with air conditioners running through the day. Air conditioning creates a lot of moisture and condensation which if not channeled away effectively, becomes an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, fungi and viruses. Adding to the concern is the fact that people who are working out are breathing heavily and also sweating profusely which further worsens the air quality. And since masks are not advisable when working out, you are exposed to more danger.

But if you are intent on getting back to your favourite work-out station then do make a note of the precautionary measures listed below:

- If your gym or fitness studio is a small, cramped space, in the backside or basement of a building, with no possibility for sunlight pouring in and fresh air flowing through, it’s advisable to search for better options not just for Covid times, but forever.

- Avoid the peak morning and evening hours if possible. Though gyms and studios have been instructed to function with 50% occupancy at all times, however during peak hours, because of the constant flow of people, the staff might not be able to carry out a thorough sanitization of the place and equipment.

- Carry extra towels, disposable disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, water enough to suffice you without having to use the water cooler at the gym, sweat bands, yoga mats and whatever else you might need and can carry. Sharing is NOT caring in Covid times.

- Carry your own disinfectant spray and wipes and use them to sanitize whatever machine or equipment you plan to use, both before, and after using it. Also make sure you sanitize your hands at regular intervals.

- Avoid touching your face at all times. Keep clean towels or wipes handy to wipe away sweat and dispose of these responsibly.

- The government has issued guidelines that require people working out at public gyms or fitness studios, to wear a mask at all times. A face shield or a light fabric mask is what should be used when exercising; N95 mask is a complete NO. But do ensure you walk-in and walk-out of the place with a mask on.

- Maintain safe distance from other people. Avoid using the changing rooms, showers, washrooms and even lockers as far as possible. This is suggested from a hygiene point of view, and also because these places are common areas for people to gather for a chat before and/or after a work-out session. Not a good time to engage in conversation, in such a setting.

- Once back home, head straight for a hot water bath. Also, clean and disinfect your gym wear – towels, clothes, socks, arm band, shoes etc., and other utilities in your gym bag, along with the bag itself thoroughly.

- If you are above 65 years of age, or a pregnant lady, or someone having co-morbidities or a weak immune system; or even if you are not feeling well, please stay at home and explore work-out options that can be done in the safety of your personal space.

- And finally, please use your discretion and stop going to the gym or fitness studio if there is a rise in the number of Covid cases in your street, locality, city and country.

While we are all trying to figure out life in this ‘new normal’, it is our duty as responsible global citizens to stay safe as well as keep others safe.
