At the beginning, Covid-induced lock-down was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us.
But as the months progressed, the enforced lockdown became tough to handle. The ‘caged-in’ feeling was tough for everyone but affected kids the most. Keeping their bundles of energy locked up at home was a nightmare for parents.
Parents were already concerned about the amount of time kids spend on their devices, and the pandemic only worsened the situation. The screen - be it a computer, laptop, tablet, mobile or television, became the sole means for any form of learning, engagement or entertainment for the kids.
Research and studies have time and again proven that over-exposure to screens contributes to increased chances of obesity, sleep problems, poor mental and physical development, social detachment and behavioral issues. While we continue to be bound by pandemic conditions to have schooling online, we must find ways to limit screen-time for kids as far as possible and get them on to an active lifestyle.
1. Set a discipline for screen-time: It is always important to lead by example. So instead of simply dictating screen time rules for the kids, involve them in defining rules concerning screen time allowed for every family member. For example, set some family-time rules like no one will be allowed to use any device during meal times. Screen entertainment will be limited to one hour a day for everyone. Explain that mom and dad need more time with their laptops or mobiles for office work.
2. Involve kids in housework: Managing the house – tidying, cleaning, cooking and performing chores, is a life skill that kids should learn early in life. Give children age-appropriate tasks, have them help you, appreciate them for a job well done and encourage them to try something new. Doing this will get them in action and allow you to have quality time doing tasks together. And with your workload getting shared, you will save on time that you can use to keep the kids engaged minus devices.
3. Fun on the move: Plan some fun activities that can be done at home but gets everyone moving. Dance to your favourite music, create an obstacle course that involves hopping, skipping, jumping, sit-ups, etc., do the hula hoop, play indoor basketball, hide-n-seek and whatever else is possible in the safety of home. More activities are possible if there is a personal terrace or garden. These would be a great way to bond with your kids and keep everyone fit and active.
4. Daily exercise schedule: Involve the kids in creating a daily exercise schedule of a minimum of 30 minutes every day. Try to keep a range of exercise options such as yoga, stretching exercises, sit-ups, skipping, crabwalk or even Zumba, dance or aerobics. Guide them, train them and join them in the activities. Kids’ energy and enthusiasm are infectious and can help raise your own energy levels.
5. Outdoor time: The Coronavirus is here to stay. Hence we all need to learn to live with it. No Covid-19 vaccination is available for kids at present. But, children have shown a strong immune response to the virus. So, while it is essential to take precautions and not let your guard down, there is no need to worry excessively. Outdoors can do a great deal of good to kids and adults. Plan some fun outdoor activities like walking, running, trekking, hiking, cycling, playing games like football, cricket, badminton, frisbee and the like, where the whole family can participate. When heading outdoors, opt for places with ample space that are less crowded and preferably close to nature.
Our attitude and perspective towards life make us view the glass as half-empty or half-full. And our attitude is what our kids inherit. So it is important to be positive, think and plan ahead of time, live happily, and stay hopeful during both the good and difficult times of life.
