5 tips for running during the monsoons

Peter Snell, the Olympic gold medallist and middle-distance runner from New Zealand, famously said, “When it’s pouring rain and you’re bowling along through the wet, there’s satisfaction in knowing that you’re out there and the others aren’t.”

Running during the monsoons can prove to be quite a challenge with the heavy downpour, slippery roads and wet clothing acting as deterrents. But expert runners believe that with the necessary precautions, it is possible to keep running even during rainy weather. Here are a few tips to help you stick to your running schedule even during the monsoons.

  1. Wear the Right Clothing

Dressing correctly for a run is one of the key factors during the monsoons. While many believe that it is important to wear many layers to keep warm and dry, it is more likely that the multiple layers will make you feel burdened and uncomfortable. The best strategy during the monsoons is to wear simple running gear with a waterproof jacket or raincoat as the outer layer. Go for brightly coloured, preferably neon clothing with reflective strips as poor visibility during rainy weather means drivers find it harder to spot runners on the road. A cap with a brim is also advisable to keep raindrops off of your face.

  2. Care for your shoes

The heavy rain and muddy weather can play havoc on your running shoes. To help keep your shoes in proper shape and to absorb excess moisture, stuff crumpled balls of newspaper into them post your run. Avoid drying them with a hairdryer or in the clothes dryer, as it could cause them to lose their shape and come apart at the soles.

  3. Keep hydrated

While running during the rainy season, the extra layers of clothing and effort of the run could cause an increase in perspiration and drain you out. So even if you don’t feel particularly thirsty, keep a water bottle handy and remember to drink sufficient water during your run.

  4. Prevent chafing

It’s normal to experience chafing during a normal run, but it could intensify during the rainy season as wet clothing rubs against the skin. Applying Vaseline or petroleum jelly to sensitive areas including the feet, inner thighs and underarms, could help reduce blisters and irritated skin.

  5. Protect your electronics

Many runners are used to carrying electronics such as mobile phones, fitness bands or MP3 players during their runs. However, remember to carry waterproof versions during the rainy season or protect them in waterproof pouches. Or better still, just leave them at home.

Often, the hardest part of running during the monsoons is just leaving home to start the run. But keeping the above tips in mind will definitely help provide some motivation to run during rainy weather. So don’t just sing in the rain...RUN!
